Questions about Internet Radio
Why should I listen to Internet radio stations?
It's very simple: Internet radio's great! Where else can you "travel" from one side of the world to the other in such a short space of time? You've just visited a tropical rainforest in Brazil, and your next click takes you live to freezing Iceland.
You'll hear the latest music trends where they start. You're right there, in New York, Paris and London and can be among the first to hear the latest tunes.
Internet radio is different from normal UKW radio: Would you like to listen to a station which plays dance music all day? Not a problem!
And when you want to know what's happening in the world, Internet radio brings you the news right from the source.
Would you like to learn another language? Just listening to an hour or two of a foreign-language station every day will soon refresh your memory.
The variety is simply enormous. And if you're having trouble finding your bearings in the world of Internet radio, phonostar will act as your guide.
How much bandwidth is used when I listen to Internet radio?
You can calculate this yourself:

A radio station always broadcasts at a particular bitrate (you can see the bitrate in the main window of the phonostar-Player while the station is playing). This bitrate is always given as KBit/s. If you're listening to a station which is broadcasting at 128 KBit/s, this means that 128 KBit are being transferred to you every SECOND. If you divide 128 KBit by 8, you'll get the number of kilobytes. This means that 16 kilobytes per second are being broadcast to you. Dividing this by 1024 gives you the number of megabytes, etc.

For example:
If you listen to a station at 128 KBit/s for an hour, 57,600 kilobytes or 56.25 megabytes of data is transferred to you. A station which broadcasts at 32 KBit/s will transfer 14,400 kilobyte or 14.06 megabytes to you in the course of an hour.
Questions about phonostar-player
Do I have to pay to use the phonostar-Player?
No, the phonostar-Player and its use are free!

Because you are connected to the Internet while you are listening to the radio using the phonostar-Player, you will, however, be responsible for your Internet connection costs. The phonostar-Player also contains no dialers, spyware, viruses or other unpleasant things.
Does my phonostar-Player work with Windows Vista?
Yes, the phonostar-Player works with Windows Vista! Click here to go to download site.

Important for recording: Install a soundcard driver for Windows Vista. You probably can download this driver at your soundcard producer's website.

You may have to change the language of the phonostar-Player after installing: Go to the menu called "Optionen" and select "Englisch" under "Sprache einstellen".
Is Windows Media Player enough, or do I also need RealPlayer?
Internet radio stations offer streams in a variety of different formats. Windows Media streams can only be played using Windows Media Player. RealAudio can be played using RealPlayer, while MP3 can be played using either Windows Media Player (Version 9 onwards!) or RealPlayer. This means that it doesn't matter which player you have installed; you can always listen to MP3 streams.
If you only have one of these players installed, phonostar-Player will only play the stream format supported by the player you have installed. This means that you won't be able to hear all the stations which are listed in the phonostar-Player. Don't worry, the choice is still huge!
In order to listen to all the stations in the phonostar database, you will need to have both Windows Media Player and RealPlayer installed. As a general rule of thumb, it is always best to install the latest version of any media player.
When installing the player there is a virus alert. Why?
We heard that the anti virus software "SpyBot Search & Destroy" detects a virus (WinFixer2005) when you install the phonostar-Player. Don't worry, there are no viruses in the phonostar-Player! SpyBot seems to have a problem there; it detects the virus in the setup programme of the player, that is executed when you install the player, and stops installation afterwards. To solve the problem you can uninstall SpyBot or turn off "TeaTimer" (a SpyBot tool that checks all new processes automatically). After installing the phonostar-Player you can use SpyBot as usual again. There is a discussion about this problem in a forum.

The phonostar-Player is 100% free of viruses, spyware, trojans etc!
I can’t listen to any of the radio stations! Why not?
If you can't receive any stations at all (please try several), there may be three causes:

1. You're not connected to the Internet. Please check that you have an Internet connection. If necessary, connect to the Internet.

2. You are using a firewall which doesn't allow the phonostar-Player to connect to the Internet. In order to listen to the radio, both the ps_radio.exe and the ps_olect.exe must be able to access the Internet. It often happens that the ps_radio.exe can access the Internet, but the ps_olect.exe cannot. This means that the database and the top stations are updated (the ps_radio.exe does this), but no stations can be received, as the ps_olect.exe is responsible for this.

3. You are connecting to the Internet via a proxy server. As some proxy servers don't transfer all the ports, the streaming ports may be blocked. If this is the case, Internet radio can only be received via HTTP. You'll need to make several settings to do this. You'll find precise instructions here.

4. If none of the above apply, and you still can't receive any radio stations, please try receiving Internet radio via the HTTP transfer protocol. In the phonostar-Player, you'll find this in the "Options" menu under "Settings" and "Internet Connection". Simply select the checkbox for "Activate HTTP Streaming" under "Settings for Proxy Servers".

If, after all that, you still can't listen to the radio, please send a brief e-mail to us describing the problem, and we will look into it.
After updating the phonostar-Player I can't listen to any radio station! Please help!
Probably your firewall doesn't allow the phonostar-Player to connect to the internet anymore. In order to listen to the radio, both the "ps_radio.exe" and the "ps_olect.exe" must be able to access the internet. Change these settings in your firewall. You will be able to listen to internet radio afterwards again.

After an update of a software most firewalls reset the access permissions to the internet so that you will have to grant access permissions again.
In the phonostar-Player and on my whole computer there are no sounds any more; Wave-Volume stands on 0 or 50%. What is going on?
it is very likely that the RealPlayer (only version 10) changes the volume of your computer. Since version 1.51.4 of the phonostar-Player this problem will be avoided. The phonostar-Player sets the volume higher again even if RealPlayer has changed it.

If this should not work or you still use an older version, open the RealPlayer and enhance the volume there. Afterwards all sounds should be returned to your computer!

Because this problem doesn't exists in older versions of the RealPlayer you can download former versions at OldVersion.com.
I get an error message saying that I need the Format tag 55 Audio Codec. What can I do?
"You need the Format tag 55 Audio Codec to play back this file." - If this or a similar message appears in the phonostar-Player when you are trying to listen to a particular station, the Codec for playing MP3s in your Windows Media Player is missing.
This is a very easy problem to solve: install the MP3 Codec from the Fraunhofer Institut on your computer. You can download this Codec directly from phonostar:

Download the MP3 Codec
I can't get Radio Herz - instead, I get an error message saying that I need the Format Tag 75 Audio Codec. What should I do?
This problem seems to be due to Windows XP, but it's an easy one to solve: the Audio Codec "Voxware" removes the error. Simply click on this link:

Download from Voxware

Once this web site is launched, you'll see a window with a warning message. This warning just says that Voxware is being installed on your computer. Click on "Yes" to perform the installation. Voxware will be installed within a few seconds. Once the installation is complete, a check mark will appear on the web site. This means that the Installation was successful. The final step is to click on Play in the Windows Media Player on the web site. You should hear a few words. After that Radio Herz works!
Is it possible to display the title and interpreter of the song currently being played?
The title and artist of the song currently being played are only displayed if you have installed Windows Media Player Version 9.0 onwards. This is because it is playing MP3 streams and so the titles can be displayed. You can download the current version of Windows Media Player from Microsoft's web site.

Whether the title and artist can be displayed also depends on the station, as this information must be transmitted in the stream from the radio station. Unfortunately this is not the case with many stations.
I'm using a proxy server and can't listen to the radio. What should I do?
Some proxy servers don't use all ports. This means that the ports which are used for streaming could be blocked. If you still want to listen to the radio you can stream it via HTTP. You can make the following settings in the phonostar-Player:

In the menu under "Options" -> "Settings" -> "Internet Connection" you will find the settings for the proxy server. Select "Use the following proxy server" and enter the IP address of the proxy server and the appropriate port number. You also need to select "Activate HTTP Streaming".

If you don't know which address and port to enter, you can check these in your browser. If you are using Internet Explorer, you will find this information under the "Tools" -> "Internet options" menu. In the window that opens, click on "Connections" and then on the "Settings" button under "LAN Settings". This will bring up a new window, from which you can copy the address and port number (these are given under "Proxy server"). Enter this information into the phonostar-Player settings.
If this doesn't work, you will need to ask your system administrator about the right settings. Certain settings - which can vary from user to user - could be preventing you from receiving Internet radio.
Which ports on router or proxy server are used to listen to internet radio?
If you use a router or a proxy server to connect to the web you might have to use ports which have to be activated in order to listen to the internet radio. These ports are used for streaming:

For RealAudio and MP3 streams:
UDP Range 6970 - 7170
TCP 7070, 7071 and 554

For Windows Media streams:
TCP 1755
UDP Range 1024 - 5000
Can I add a stream I've activated using "Enter Stream URL" to my favourites?
You cannot use the "Enter Stream URL" to add a radio station to your favourites. You can, however, create your own stations for this purpose (in the "On Air" menu, go to "Add radio station").

You can also recommend the station you want to listen to to us. We'll enter it in our database, so that you can call up the radio station in the phonostar-Player directly and add it to your favourites.

Please send your station recommendations to neuesender@phonostar.de.
Why does the transmission of some stations cut out after a certain amount of time?
Some radio stations put a time limit on their live streams as they want to save their bandwidth for large numbers of listeners. This means that the stream may only last 20 minutes, for example, and then your connection will be interrupted.

If this happens, phonostar-Player should automatically connect with the station again. This will, however, not work if the station doesn't cut the connection cleanly, which sometimes happens. In the menu under "Options" - "Settings" - "Connection settings" you can check whether the reconnection option has been selected.
Why is the station buffered so often?
Sometimes a very slow Internet connection can cause data to be buffered frequently. In order to listen to radio programmes, you must have enough bandwidth. If you're using a modern or an ISDN connection and are trying to listen to a station at 128 KBit/s, for example, you won't have enough bandwidth to listen to the programme uninterrupted. You can see which streaming quality is most suitable for your Internet connection in our FAQ.

As the data is transmitted irregularly in the stream, it is buffered on your computer to ensure that the stream can still be played back smoothly. You can change the size of the buffer in the settings (in "Options" - "Settings" - "Connection Settings"). If you increase the number of seconds more data will be saved in one go. Buffering will take longer, but there will be fewer interruptions. We've learned that 5 seconds is optimal. Above 20 seconds there is usually no great difference.
Which stream quality should I choose for my Internet connection?
When listening to a station, you should always select the most suitable stream for your Internet connection to avoid interruptions during play.

Which stream quality for which Internet connection?

Modem: up to 32 KBit/s
ISDN: up to 64 KBit/s
DSL and above: all stream qualities

In the station information (click on the little "Info-i" icon next to the station name), you'll see a list of all the streams that the radio station offers, with the stream quality. Click on a stream to play it.
Why does Internet Explorer open instead of my default browser when I click on a link?
Unfortunately there is nothing we can do to stop this from happening. As Internet Explorer is used for the little web site in the phonostar-Player, all pages that you call up by clicking on a link in the Player are also opened in the same programme - Internet Explorer. We tried to find a solution for this some time ago, but we realised then that there was, unfortunately, no way to change it.

If, however, you click on links from the player (like the link to the station's homepage via the little house icon or the e-mail form), this should launch your default browser.
How can I find radio stations which broadcast radio plays? Are there stations which only broadcast radio plays?
There are unfortunately no radio stations which just (or primarily) broadcast radio plays. This is why there is no separate genre for them in the phonostar-Player. Most of the radio stations which broadcast radio plays are culture stations, and you can view these by using the phonostar-Player to search for the genre "Culture and art stations" (this term covers things like radio plays, features, in-depth reports, etc).
What are skins?
Skins are swappable user interfaces for the phonostar-Player (they are also called "skins" by other applications too). Changing the skin allows you to change the appearance of the phonostar-Player to suit your taste. You can download the skins which phonostar is currently offering here (most are only german skins).

In the phonostar-Player, you can call up all the skins that you have downloaded via the "Skins" button in the expandable window. If you click on one of the skins in the list, it will replace the active skin on your phonostar-Player.
Can I create my own skins?
At the moment it is currently not possible to create your own skins. Skin creation is reserved for our sponsors to enable them to offer a radio player in their own design. This is also how phonostar gets much of its funding. Unfortunately we cannot say at this moment whether skin programming will be released to the general public. Thank you for understanding!
Is there a phonostar-Player for the Mac?
Unfortunately the phonostar-Player is not yet available for the Mac. We may offer one at a later date, but unfortunately we cannot provide any more details at this point.
Questions about Recordings
How can I record a radio programme?
Right at the beginning, you will need to make some recording settings (in the menu under "Options" -> "Settings") and enter the recording source and the default directory for saving your recordings.

Before each recording you should adjust the recording volume in the window under "Record". You need to do this because the different radio stations broadcast at different volumes and recordings can therefore be too loud or too quiet. The red warning light above the volume gauge should not come on, if possible, as this means that it is too loud (you will get a crackly recording). You want to get the gauge as high as possible without it being too loud. You can also set the recording volume automatically. Here you find more information about this feature.
If you use Windows Vista you don't need these settings! The recording volume is always adjusted automatically there. But install a soundcard driver for Windows Vista before recording!

You should also make sure that you have sufficient hard drive space to record the entire programme. The phonostar-Player will show how much recording time you have left; this will enable you to see whether or not you have enough space left on your hard drive.

Then all you need to do is click on the Record button (the button with the red circle on it, near the Play and Stop buttons, etc.), and recording will begin!

To stop recording, simply click on the Record button again. A window will appear showing the name of the file you've just recorded, and where it has been saved. Under this you will see three buttons: To save the recording as it appears in the window, click "OK". To change the filename and the location, click on "Change". To delete the file, click on "Delete".

Happy recording!
What can I use to play back the files I've recorded?
You can play back the files you have recorded with a regular media player (such as Winamp for MP3 or Windows Media Player for WAV files). When you double-click on a saved file, Windows will select the most appropriate player for playing back the files from the players you have installed and open it.
How can I record radio programmes in MP3 format?
To record radio stations in MP3 formats select "MP3" as recording format (press on "Recording" in the expandable window of the player and select the file format under "File Format"). Then you'll need a third-party programme, the so-called Lame Encoder. This Encoder converts the recorded data to MP3 format during the recording progress. Due to licence reasons, the Lame Encoder is not installed with the phonostar-Player, but you can download it from the Internet at any time. The phonostar-Player makes the download easier for you: After selecting "MP3" a window will open where you can start the download. Afterwards the Lame Encoder will be downloaded from an external source and then the phonostar-Player will install the Lame Encoder automatically.
The file I recorded is playing, but I don't hear any sound. What's going on?
If you can't hear anything when playing back a recorded file, this may be because the recording source or the recording device have been set wrongly, or the recording volume is too low. To solve the problem, please try the following:

Windows Vista:
Please install a soundcard driver for Windows Vista! You probably can download this driver at your soundcard producer's website.

Windows XP, 2000, ME, 98:
Play a radio station in the phonostar-Player and record it. Use the "Recording" button in the expandable window to switch to the recording window. You should see the message "Recording paused due to silence" under Recording Status.

Increase the recording volume by dragging the control underneath the gauge next to the Status field right to the end.

Attention! If the recording volume is set automatically (Is this automatic activated, the word "Auto" is shown beside the volume gauge in the recording window), you won't need to drag the control right to the end, the control should already stand at the end. You even don't have to adjust the recording volume by yourself, the phonostar-Player does it automatically.

Has the gauge reached its maximum now, and do you see "Recording in progress" in the Recording Status?

YES: You can record! Adjust the recording volume using the control to ensure that it is not too high or too low. The red warning light above the volume gauge should not come on, as this means that it is too loud (you'll get a crackly recording). You want to get the gauge as high as possible without it being too loud.
( Automatical setting of recording volume)

NO: You've probably set the wrong recording source. Go to the recording settings (in the menu under "Options" - "Settings" - "Recording Settings") and select another recording source (or also another recording device). The choice of recording source depends on your computer's sound card - the most likely sources are "What you hear", "Direct Sound" or "Stereo Mix". Recording sources like "Line in", "Microphone", "Video" or "Aux" are probably wrong. Then press "OK".

Do you see "Recording in progress" under Recording Status and has the gauge reached its maximum?

Adjust the recording volume using the control to ensure that it is not too high or too low. The red warning light above the volume gauge should not come on, as this means that it is too loud (you'll get a crackly recording). You want to get the gauge as high as possible without it being too loud.
Automatical adjustment of recording volume

If none of the recording sources work, this may mean that you need to increase your computer's system volume first. This is fairly easy to do. At the bottom of your monitor, on the right-hand side, you'll see a loudspeaker symbol. Double-click on it, and the "Playback Control" window will open. This window contains a volume control for "Wave" (this depends on your sound card, but "Wave" or "Wave/MP3" are the most common names for it). This control influences the general volume of sounds on your computer, including the recording source. Drag this control upwards (into the top third) and watch the gauge in the expandable window under "Recording" in the phonostar-Player. Once it reaches its maximum, you will hear sounds which you can record, and you will see "Recording in progress" under "Recording Status". You might have to try it with different recording sources again, if you haven't found the right one.

If this doesn't work, your sound card may not support recording. You can check this manually. You'll find instructions on how to do this here (german only).

My recorded files "crackle" when I play them back. Why?
The recording volume is probably too high, and this is causing the crackling sounds. Before recording, you should adjust the recording volume in the window under "Recording", as the different stations broadcast at different volumes. This causes recordings to be too loud or too quiet. The red warning light above the volume gauge should not come on, as this means that it is too loud. You want to get the gauge as high as possible without it being too loud. From version 1.5 of the phonostar-Player you can also set the recording volume automatically - you don't have to set the volume yourself before each recording! Is this automatic activated, the word “Auto” is shown beside the volume gauge in the recording-window. You can activate/deactivate the automatic volume setting in the menu “Options” -> “Setting” -> “Recording settings”.
The sounds my computer makes are recorded when I record files from the radio. Can I prevent this from happening?
"The phonostar-Player records everything you hear on your computer, including Windows menu sounds, sounds made by web sites, etc. To avoid this, you need to turn off all the sounds on your computer.

To turn off the menu sounds, go to "Start" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel" -> "Sounds and Multimedia" (or "Sounds and Audio Devices). In the window that opens, select "No Sounds" in the "Sounds" tab. This turns off all sounds made by your computer.

To deactivate web site sounds, you need to go to Internet Explorer. (if you're using a different browser, you'll need to turn the sounds off there instead): In the menu, choose "Tools" "Internet Options" . In the window which opens, click on "Advanced" and remove the tick (check mark) at "Play web site sounds".

You may also have defined that certain programmes (like email programmes, for example) should play a sound for certain actions. You'll need to turn these sounds off as well."
Which recording source should I select to record Internet radio?
This depends on your sound card. The most common sources are "What you hear", "Direct Sound" or "Stereo Mix". Sources like "Microphone", "CD player", "Line In" or "entry", etc, are unlikely.
To check whether you have selected the correct recording source play a radio station in the phonostar-Player and check whether the volume gauge in the expandable window under "Recording" has reached its maximum. If you try all the sources, the volume gauge will reach its maximum when you choose the right one.

Windows Vista
If you use Windows Vista you don't need to select any recording source or device! But install a soundcard driver for Windows Vista before recording.
I want to select a recording source, but I can't click on anything. What do I do?
Windows Vista
If you use Windows Vista you don't need to select any recording source or device! But install a soundcard driver for Windows Vista before recording.

Windows XP, 2000, ME, 98:
When there are no recording sources to select or the field is deactivated, this can have three causes:

1. You don't need to select a recording source; your sound card will do that automatically. You should then be able to record. Check that you can do this by listening to a radio programme - the volume gauge in the expandable window under "Recording" will be at its maximum level.

2. You use several sound cards in your computer. In this case select another sound card in recording settings (via menü "Options" -> "Settings") in field "Recording device".

3. You can't record anything with your sound card. Updating the drivers for your sound card might help. Please check with the manufacturer of your sound card about new versions of the required drivers. If this still doesn't work, unfortunately the only thing that will help is a new sound card :-(
You can check manually whether your sound card supports recording or not. You'll find instructions on how to do this this
here (german only)
The recording source in the phonostar-Player is always adjusted! How can I prevent this?
Just install the newest version of the phonostar-Player (at least version 1.52)!
The recording function in my phonostar-Player is not activated. What should I do?
You can activate the phonostar-Player's recording function under "Options" -> "Settings" -> "Recording Settings". Please read the legal notice there and only activate the recording function if you agree to it. You can deactivate the recording function again at any time.
Is recording radio programmes legal?
Recording radio programmes with the phonostar-Player is legal. You can, however, only make recordings for private use (this means that you cannot sell them, reproduce them, publish them, etc). You can therefore use the phonostar-Player with a clear conscience!

Once you have installed the phonostar-Player, you'll receive a comprehensive legal notice, which you must read before you can activate the recording function. You can also deactivate the recording function at any time (via the menu settings in "Options" -> "Settings" -> "Recording Settings")."
Is it possible to schedule recordings of radio programmes?
Yes! The phonostar-Player is equipped with the so called Timer function, which allows you to schedule recordings or play backs of radio programmes. You can also define when your computer should be shut down - So you can save electricity if you are e.g. recording a programme at dead of night.
Can I also record music etc. that isn't played back in the phonostar-Player?
The phonostar-Player records each sound that you hear on your computer, so you can record radio or other sounds that are not played back in the phonostar-Player. If you listen to music from websites, an archieved radio broadcast etc., just start a recording in the phonostar-Player (of course without playing a radio station in the phonostar-Player), and it will be recorded!
What does the "time remaining" message in the record window mean?
The time remaining shows how much more you can record. When you record, you are saving files to your hard drive. This, of course, takes up hard drive space. The phonostar-Player converts the amount of available space on your hard drive into units of time. This enables you to see how much more you can record to your hard drive.

If there is very little time remaining, you should try to free up more space on your hard drive so that the recording isn't suddenly interrupted due to lack of space.
Can I set the recording volume automatically?
Yes, you can set the recording volume automatically - you don't have to set the volume yourself before each recording! The sign “Auto” next to the volume gauge in the recording window indicates that the automatic is activated. You can activate/deactivate the automatic volume setting in the menu “Options” -> “Setting” -> “Recording settings”.

If you use Windows Vista you don't need these settings! The recording volume is always adjusted automatically there. But install a soundcard driver for Windows Vista before recording!
